"Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food." – Hippocrates

This ancient wisdom emphasizes the profound connection between health and nutrition. It means that you can be healthy by eating all the good stuff your body needs to stay healthy and feel great without having to rely on medicine. Sounds simple, right? Maybe not.

Nowadays, we're given access to many types of food and gastronomic delights—maintaining fitness and feeling great can be a challenge, especially in our tropical climate and unpredictable weather where exercising can be a challenge. However, with proper exercise also comes the need for the right nutrition. You can support your body and your fitness goals using readily available ingredients around you. Focusing on local ingredients means that you're not only nourishing your body but also supporting local farmers and sustainable eating practices. It is important to align nutrition with a holistic view of health and always consider both the personal and the well-being of your community and even the environment. Let’s explore five delicious recipes that not only taste great but also support the body’s natural processes and overall wellness.

1, Malunggay and Pineapple Smoothie – Start your day with this nutrient-packed smoothie. Blend fresh malunggay leaves (moringa), ripe pineapple chunks, a small piece of ginger, and coconut water. Malunggay is a local superfood rich in vitamins and minerals, while pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion. The ginger adds a zing and helps reduce inflammation.

2. Glow Bowl with Adlai – For lunch, try this filling bowl using adlai, a local grain similar to rice but with more protein and fiber. Cook adlai and top it with steamed kangkong (water spinach), grated carrots, sliced mangoes, and grilled chicken or tofu. Drizzle with a calamansi-based dressing. This balanced meal provides a range of nutrients to keep you energized throughout the day.

3. Sinigang-Inspired Vegetable Soup – This comforting soup is perfect for dinner. Make a light broth using tamarind fruit as a base, then add an assortment of vegetables like okra, radish, eggplant, and string beans. Include some bangus (milkfish) or tofu for protein. The sourness of tamarind aids digestion, while the variety of vegetables provides essential nutrients.

4. Chia-Gulaman Pudding – For a sweet treat, try this twist on a Filipino favorite. Soak chia seeds in coconut milk, then layer with homemade gulaman (agar) flavored with real fruit juice like calamansi or dalandan. Top with fresh mango chunks. This dessert is rich in omega-3 fatty acids from the chia seeds and provides a good source of fiber.

5. Salabat-Lemongrass Infusion – Stay hydrated in our hot climate with this refreshing drink. Brew a light salabat (ginger tea) and add fresh lemongrass. Chill and serve over ice. This caffeine-free drink aids digestion, may help reduce inflammation, and provides a refreshing alternative to sugary beverages.
